Today, Galena is celebrated for its remarkably preserved character, with more than 85 percent of its buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Driving down Main Street feels like stepping back in time - many of the structures standing there today date back to when Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th president of the United States, once called Galena home. It also has a number of historic architectural gems, particularly in the downtown area, many dating back to the 19th century when Rushville was established.
